Oscar Night! This is our 4th year putting on this youth event that has turned into an event for the whole family. I never dreamed it would turn into such a hit with young and old alike.
Every January, we pick leaders to make 6 different films from different genres. They’ve got 4 months to write a script, gather a cast, film and edit their movies down to 15 minute short films. We then watch all the films together on a Friday night and do a formal award ceremony for the best actors, actresses, editors, etc.
It’s such a fun part of our year as a youth ministry. To convince you to come join us this Friday, May 6th at 7pm, I’m going to give you my top 5 things I love about Oscar Night.
1. Atmosphere
The atmosphere during Oscar Night is electric. We roll out the red carpet in front of the church. There are movie posters up and artwork all over. And then 100′s of people show up. The buzz about what films are going to win what awards creates this really social environment than is enjoyable for all. It’s cool just being there.
2. Lots of Laughs
The films make me laugh so hard that I cry. Seriously. I’m shocked at the creativity that comes out of these young people. They are so funny on the screen and off. Everyone likes laughing.
3. Formal Wear
Oscar Night doubles as a prom alternative for our youth ministry. Many of our youth decide not to go to school dances
and many parents are opposed to them. So having another environment for our young ladies to wear a prom dress is a cool thing for them. They come looking fabulous but don’t have to deal with the temptation of wrapping their arms around someone from the opposite sex all night long. And all the youth pastors and parents said, “Amen.”

4. Food
Good food is included in the cost of admission to Oscar Night and our event team goes all out. We’ve had meatballs, shrimp, cream puffs, chocolate covered fruit, fruit punch, sparkling cider, chocolate fountains and all sorts of goodness for refreshments over the years. We’ll see what mouth watering stuff gets put out this year. I heard that Trina is involved in the
food this year, so you know it’s going to be good.
5. Families Together
Like I said, we started this event as a youth event but over the years it has turned into an event for the whole family. This is something I love as a youth pastor because so many of our programs and events tend to separate the young people from their parents. It’s really good to have events where the whole family, including aunts and uncles, grandmas and grandpas, come out and cheer for their young people on the big screen. I love families laughing and enjoying life together.
Oscar Night takes an immense amount of work to pull off. The people that do the editing for the movies put in an incredible amount of hours getting them ready. Sleep is forgone in the week leading up to the event as all the finishing touches are added. But every year when the event arrives, the people show up and the enjoyment begins all the sacrifices are worth it.
If you are in the Boise area this Friday night come join us. You’ll have a great time.
